The Actress Who Plays the Robot Doll in ‘Squid Game’ Is Speaking Out After Going Viral

Looks like everyone is watching the new Netflix series Squid game right now and the show is even on track to become streamers’ most watched show of all time.

The robot doll that appeared in episode one became a viral craze and Vulture tracked down the voice actress for the role.

Squid game follows 456 desperate contestants competing against each other in a mysterious and deadly survival game that includes multiple rounds of childhood games for a prize pool of 45.6 billion won (approximately $38.6 million). can help them get out of their misery.

In episode one, 456 people competed in their first game, which was “Red Light, Green Light”. The 10-foot-tall robot doll sings “Sharon’s rose has bloomed” with its head turned upside down. The contestant can move forward when the head is turned in the opposite direction, but when she turns, they must be completely still. If the doll catches anyone moving, they will be shot dead.

The voice actress for Robot Doll says her name is “Chantal.”

“When my agent called me about the role, I couldn’t believe it. I think the creator [Hwang Dong-hyuk] saw me in Satoshi Kon’s Paprika, it was my first big break. As soon as I read the script, I immediately connected with the character. I sent a tape and then flew out from Berlin to meet Dong-hyuk, and he asked me to join on the spot. The whole experience is surreal. And it’s easy to memorize lines. Well, the line,” Chantal speak.

Chantal was asked if she got tired of saying the same line over and over. She said, “It really became an acting challenge — how do you tweak it a little bit each time? How do you draw the line between gullibility and intimidation? Director Hwang will ask me to try different ways until we find the right tone. But the hardest part was that it was all dust and kept my eyes open for close-ups! The actors got really excited while filming, so I used a liter of eye drops. ”

Chantal says she had “a truly incredible experience. I was really nervous at first because this is such a big production, but the entire cast and crew are very enthusiastic and professional. I had a dance with some background actors, which really put me at ease. I studied a lot of expressive arts based on movement: mime (as I mentioned), modern, kabuki. So dancing really helped connect me to my body.”
