Nick Cannon created a viral moment at the MTV Video Music Awards when he jokingly proposed to Ashanti, but the comedian has now claimed it wasn’t really him.

The Wild N Out host was said to have attended the star-studded awards ceremony Sunday night in New York, when a man who looked like him seriously appeared on the red carpet.

It’s all based on the moment that nerdy singer Ashanti arrived at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn wearing a striking lace-up gown.

A sporty man with a red padlock, a sparkly white vest, yellow trousers and boots, then ran up to the R&B singer and got on his knees pretending to propose. In the romantic moment, ‘Nick’ took Ashanti’s hand and planted a kiss on it.

It was widely publicized about Nick and he became a trending topic on Twitter, but now he says otherwise.

Sharing a snap of himself and the colorful character at the VMAs, the comedian wrote: ‘Usually I don’t mention gossip on this social media but after my name was trending WORLD WORLD for something that I don’t do, I must say you all trippin about this on! [sic]

‘I have a brand new Talk show coming out on September 27th! Why did I come to VMA’s like this!? I heard there’s a cool new rapper named @MurdaCountHarlem I don’t see anything similar # Honestly. ‘

Scary movie star Marlon Wayans joked in the comments: ‘No, that nickname is ME. They are just confusing us. ‘

Nick’s followers were unconvinced by his explanation and many pointed out that Murda Count Harlem has tattoos on his arms identical to the star.

Calling Nick out, one said: ‘It’s crazy how you guys have the same tattoos’, while another said: ‘We saw your tattoos 😂😂😂😂.’

‘It’s your alter ego, don’t lie,’ said another unconvincing fan.

Another considered: ‘It’s not without hiding their nick,’ as one emphasized: ‘It’s definitely a cannon nick.’

“That’s you Nick 😁😁 you just made an Instagram too,” laughed another.

Nick links to Murda Count Harlem’s Instagram page, which looks brand new as it has no posts and just over 8,000 followers, even though the rapper claims in his bio to be a ‘Transparent Recording Rapper’. needle six times 💯 MURDAAAAA single.’

Plus, when you Google ‘Murda Count Harlem’, nothing about the rapper shows up in the results – except the actual number of murders in Harlem.

Ashanti was as dumbfounded as we were and shared photos of the red carpet moment, while also laughing with the caption: ‘I didn’t even know it was you.’

So it looks like we’ll be listening to new music by Nick, sorry, Murda Count Harlem.
